When families search for adult day care in St. Louis, they’re not just looking for a service — they’re looking for trust, dignity, and peace of mind.

St. Elizabeth’s Adult Day Care Centers (SEADCC), our story began in 1981 with a simple but powerful mission: to create a safe, meaningful daytime community for older adults and individuals with special needs. More than four decades later, that mission continues to guide everything we do.

If you’ve ever wondered how St. Elizabeth’s Adult Day Care Centers became one of the region’s leading adult day care providers, here’s how it all began — and why it still matters for families today.

How Adult Day Care Began at St. Elizabeth’s

In the early 1980s, adult day services were still relatively new. Families caring for aging loved ones often had only two choices: leave them home alone or consider full-time institutional care. There were few structured, affordable options in between.

Recognizing this growing need, Sister John Antonio of the Sisters of the Most Precious Blood opened St. Elizabeth Day Care on August 3, 1981, in part of the former St. Elizabeth Academy building. The program began with just five participants.

There was no elaborate launch plan — just a deep commitment to serving older adults with dignity, hospitality, and compassion.

A Mission Rooted in Dignity and Faith

From the beginning, St. Elizabeth’s mission has been clear:

To provide a safe, comfortable, wholesome, and meaningful environment for aging adults and persons with special needs, respecting each individual and promoting dignity.

This approach set SEADCC apart from traditional models of care. Adult day care here was never just about supervision — it was about community, engagement, and honoring each person’s value.

Participants were (and still are) encouraged to engage socially, emotionally, and spiritually — not simply receive care, but experience belonging.

Why Adult Day Care Matters for Families

Today, families across St. Louis face many of the same challenges that existed in 1981: balancing careers, caregiving responsibilities, and the desire to keep loved ones safely at home.

Adult day care services provide:

  • Structured activities and social engagement

  • Supervision and safety during the day

  • Relief and respite for caregivers

  • Support for individuals living with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia, stroke, Parkinson's, autism, Down Syndrome, and other disabilities.

  • A cost-effective alternative to full-time institutional care

By offering daytime care, families can delay or even prevent unnecessary nursing home placement while maintaining stability at home.

That was true at our founding — and it remains true today.

Growing with the St. Louis Community

Over the decades, St. Elizabeth’s expanded thoughtfully to meet community needs. By the late 1990s, multiple sites were operating, each certified as a Medicaid provider.

Grants, partnerships, and careful financial stewardship allowed for renovations, transportation services, and welcoming facilities designed specifically for adult day programming.

In 2020, St. Elizabeth’s became a sponsored ministry of the Sisters of Charity of The Incarnate Word and an affiliated ministry of the Incarnate Word Foundation — strengthening its mission and ensuring long-term sustainability.

Through every phase of growth, one thing has never changed: our commitment to personal, compassionate care.

The Difference Families Feel

Families often say that walking into St. Elizabeth’s “feels different.” That’s intentional.

Our history describes bright rooms, welcoming spaces, meaningful activities, laughter, music, and a strong sense of community. That environment was envisioned from the start — and continues to define us.

We are not simply an adult day care center.

We are a community built on respect, presence, and purpose.
